Carolina Wrens (Updated Photos 5/18/07)
The birds are gone now, but it was very cool to have them in our door…
April 20, 2007
I wrote in my last post about the Carolina wrens who have made their nest in the wreath on our front door. They are beginning to hatch. I wanted to devote a post just to them.
In this artificial wreath is a very real nest…
We discovered the nest with eggs on April 20th
Yesterday May 2nd, I noticed that one had hatched. Tried to get a photo, but it didn’t turn out very good, and I didn’t want to disturb them any more.
I took the next two photos tonight. It’s hard to see them all, but I think three have hatched now. It is so neat to watch their little lives begin.
More Photos (5/6/07)…It is kinda hard to distinguish one bird from another. They look like a “bird mass”The dark spots are their eyes, which I haven’t seen opened yet. In this photo, one of the bird’s head is in the lower right hand corner and its beak is pointing to the right.
(5/9/07) They are starting to look “birdish”. The first shot is clearer than the second one, but I missed their heads.I bumped the wreath while taking this one and the two in the back immediately opened their mouths as if to say, “Feed me.”
One photo today 5/11/07 – There are definitely only two birds. You can really see the color coming out in their wings now.
I see eyes for the first time today. Erin is home for Mother’s Day weekend, so we took pictures together.
Here they are on May 17th. Ready to Fly!
Today they flew away! I am anxious to see if they come back to the nest to rest or what. It has been a real learning experience for me. Here’s the empty nest… or is that a bird toilet?
