homeThis song was on my mind today. Diana Ross sang it as Dorothy in The Wiz. I cried watching this video on Youtube. I imagine my friends watching the video and wondering if I have gone completely over the edge. I can only respond that I am particularly emotional these days.  Having my family all together and with one of us in such a bad spot hit me hard, especially these lyrics:

If you’re list’ning god
Please don’t make it hard to know
If we should believe in the things that we see
Tell us, should we run away
Should we try and stay
Or would it be better just to let things be?

Living here, in this brand new world
Might be a fantasy
But it taught me to love
So it’s real, real to me

This whole situation is teaching me to love. It is teaching me to receive love. I love you, Kat.

Home (from The Wiz)
When I think of home
I think of a place where there’s love overflowing
I wish I was home
I wish I was back there with the things I been knowing
Wind that makes the tall trees bend into leaning
Suddenly the snowflakes that fall have a meaning
Sprinklin’ the scene, makes it all clean
Maybe there’s a chance for me to go back there
Now that I have some direction
It would sure be nice to be back home
Where there’s love and affection
And just maybe I can convince time to slow up
Giving me enough time in my life to grow up
Time be my friend, let me start again
Suddenly my world has changed it’s face
But I still know where I’m going
I have had my mind spun around in space
And yet I’ve watched it growing
If you’re list’ning god
Please don’t make it hard to know
If we should believe in the things that we see
Tell us, should we run away
Should we try and stay
Or would it be better just to let things be?
Living here, in this brand new world
Might be a fantasy
But it taught me to love
So it’s real, real to me
And I’ve learned
That we must look inside our hearts
To find a world full of love

  1. Jim,
I have not watched the video yet but I am looking forward to watching it. Maybe I will go over the edge with you, I’d be glad to. I like the honesty in the lyrics. I admire and appreciate your authenticity. I love you, my friend.

  2. Jim,
I watched the youtube and I googled the lyrics. I like the first two lines.
    “When I think of home
I think of a place where there’s love overflowing”
I know that you and Jeanie have desired to create in your home “a place where there’s love overflowing”. I am sure that when your daughters think of home, they remember how their folks tried, as best as they knew how, to create a place where there was love overflowing. I can understand how it is emotional for you as you remember, yet deal with Kat’s situation.

Thanks for sharing the song. I think that home is being with the people we love. It is great to be with you, Jim. I know your daughters are glad to be home. 🙂

  3. Jim-I am stirred by you engagement-that you ARE feeling deeply because I believe that is a place God made for us to live. It is a place where we can love deeply from the heart, & honestly, if any of us were to call you crazy or hint at any criticism, it would be because we aren’t in that place with you. I would be comfortably numb & disconnected from myself and others-friends like you drag me away from my natural tendencies that would consider these places of disconnected numbness as “normal!” But you, Jim, honor your daughters by being wholly present and engaged with them-what a gift!
